All aboard in August for free trip around the CBD

The much-anticipated free Parramatta city centre shuttle bus service, called The Loop, is expect to commence at the end of August. The cost of purchasing the three buses and the street furniture at each stop was $1.5 million council said. It has budgeted for an on-going running cost of $550,000 per year, funded through parking meters income and sponsor support. “As the economic capital of Western Sydney, as the gateway to Australia’s fastest growing region, Parramatta is in need of a quick, reliable and low-pollution transport system around the city (sic),” Lord Mayor, Paul Barber, said. The 4.1-kilometre loop of the CBD should take 20 minutes.

Council wins on project, maybe

Parramatta City Council can compulsory acquire property in Darcy Street for its $1.4 billion Civic Place project, following a decision by the NSW Court of Appeal. Property owners, however, have 28 days to appeal. Earlier, the Land and Environment Court decided against council acquiring the properties for its development, with partner Grocon, of a project including a 44-storey office tower, 250 apartments, some 35,000 square metres of retail space and council, community and open spaces. The project could be completed by 2014.

More than sport at Parramatta Stadium

The Parramatta Stadium Trust proposes to attract to the stadium, a key sporting and recreational venue in Sydney, activities other than sport, such as, concerts, music festivals, cultural festivals, children’s carnivals and motorcross events. In days long gone by the site was used for horse racing, as a speedway and for boxing matches

Research funding for UWS

UWS Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Andrew Cheetham, has welcomed the latest round of ARC funding for the university. “ARC Linkage grants are highly sought after … and the size of these research grants highlights the calibre of research at UWS," said Professor Cheetham. “UWS serves to be a vital hub for new knowledge and innovation, making a difference to the lives of individuals and communities with Greater Western Sydney and beyond through its research program.
