About 70 people attended an open day at Liverpool Hospital that focused on highlighting job opportunities in the healthcare sector for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Liverpool Hospital acting general manager, Anthony Schembri, said the hospital had an excellent record of employing and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff but more could be done to increase the number of workers. He said that in 2009 the former Sydney South West Area Health Service set out to recruit, train and retain Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff in health professions, administration, human resources and support roles. "Results so far have been excellent," he said.

Macquarie University’s vice-chancellor, Steven Schwartz, will join Premier Barry O’Farrell’s first official visit to India, on Saturday.

Blacktown. Push to form chapter

The Fairfield-based Cumberland Business Chamber, wants to start a Blacktown chapter to lobby for small businesses and industry in Blacktown. Cumberland Business Chamber, GM, Narelle Stoker, said the chapter would focus specifically on the needs of Blacktown businesses. “Our members range from family owned shops to million-dollar companies. We provide them with a voice. The chamber has good connections with the state and local governments and we are able to represent the business community at those levels,” she said. The chamber represents more than 300 businesses in the local government areas of Blacktown, Fairfield and Holroyd

Parramatta. Relatively low additions

Annual additions in Parramatta have been relatively low over the past five years averaging 19,255 square metres per annum. This is likely to increase as approximately 75,000 square metres of new office space supply is anticipated to be completed from 2012-2015, according to the CBRE. The first of these developments is the 25,000-square-metre Eclipse, under construction, at 60 Station Street, after securing 70 per cent in tenant pre-commitment and is due for completion in mid-2012.

Region. Second airport findings in December

The findings of the joint federal and NSW Government study into the Sydney region’s aviation capacity will report its findings in December. Mike Mrdak, secretary of the federal Department of Infrastructure, said the study was examining and assessing all aviation assets, including military sites, in the greater Sydney basin between Newcastle and Canberra, for Sydney’s second airport.

Parramatta. TAFE partnership

The partnership between South Western Sydney Institute and Western Sydney Institute has resulted in the office of TAFE NSW – Greater Western Sydney, located in Phillip Street, in the Parramatta CBD, to service the business sector and the community of Greater Western Sydney.
