Parramatta. Architectural firms merge

The merger of Parramatta-based Glanville Architects Pty Ltd, and the Sydney office of the Brisbane-based firm, Thomson Adsett Architects, will see the relocation of the Sydney CBD staff to Parramatta, bring the total employees in the Parramatta office to 40. Charles Glanville will become managing director, of Thomson Adsett in NSW. Charles Glanville, which has been operating in Western Sydney since 1976, moved to Parramatta in 1983. Mr Glanville began his private practice, in 1976, in Penrith, designing school facilities in that rapidly growing area of Sydney. In the tertiary education sector, the practice included 12 projects for the University of Western Sydney at six of their campuses, particularly, at Kingswood and Blacktown campuses. The practice relocated to Parramatta, in 1983, to be more accessible to both staff and clients.


Parramatta. Need for 24-hour focus

Parramatta City Council has been advised to establish a policy and regulatory framework that has a 24-hour focus in its drive to develop a night-time economy. “What is clear is that the established methods of policy, planning and management have not been wholly effective in creating diverse, vibrant and safe spaces,” said a UWS report. “Through a combination of imagination and judicious cultural planning, after-dark life in Parramatta can develop into a significant civic asset for residents and as a major locus of attraction for visitors.” The report, “After Dark. Cultural Planning and Governance of the Night Time Economy of Parramatta”, was prepared for council by the UWS Centre for Cultural Research.


Parramatta. Eight-storey building proposed

Parramatta City Council is considering a DA for the demolition of a 3-storey apartment building, at 6 Sorrell Street, and the construction of an 8-storey mixed-use building containing two ground floor commercial tenancies and 24 apartments, over four levels of basement car parking, with strata subdivision. The estimated cost of construction is $4 million.


Eastern Creek. Property sold for data centre

Investa Property Group has sold a 3.5-hectare parcel of industrial land, at the Turn 4 Industrial Estate, at Eastern Creek, for about $12 million, to Woolworths. It is expected to be used as a data centre, which is expected to be used as a $43 million data centre housing computer systems and associated components to store data across all of its businesses. Construction jobs would total 200 and 30 when operational.

Westmead. $40 million school project gets OK

Parramatta City Council has approved a $40 million education project, at Westmead, which includes demolition of 12 buildings, alterations and additions to Catherine McAuley and Parramatta Marist high schools, and the construction of a primary school for 420 students and an out-of-school-hours centre for 50 students.
