North Ryde. Uni wins Green Globe award

Macquarie University’s commitment to the environment has been recognised when it received a NSW Government Green Globe Award, which are the leading environmental awards in NSW. They showcase outstanding achievement in the sustainable use of natural resources in NSW and leadership in tackling climate change issues. The university won the Public Sector Award for 2010.

Parramatta. Workshop on CBD lanes strategy

Parramatta City Council will invite a representative from Melbourne City Council to a workshop on its laneways strategy in the Parramatta CBD. There are currently 57 lanes in the CBD, with the majority in the commercial core. Council says lanes provide, public amenity, economic and heritage benefits. The lanes policy supports the retention of a well functioning lanes network that will increase the extent of retail frontage at street level supporting a commercially viable city centre for Parramatta.

Arndell Park. Ark Corporation wins award

Ark Corporation, supplier of a wide range of products including tow and hitch supplies, lights and lamps, and power battery boxes, based in Arndell Park, won the award for Best Marine Industry Export Performance in 2009 (Small Exporter) NSW, in the 2010 Australian Marine Industry Export Awards.

Lidcombe. $7 milion modification at Tooheys

Minister for Planning, Tony Kelly, has approved a $7 million modification of the Tooheys brewery, at Lidcombe, that will allow the company to meet the growing demand for Heineken. The installation of five new fermentation vessels would enable Tooheys to increase local Heineken production by 45 per cent. Once the fermentation vessels were installed, the plant would produce all bottled and draught Heineken sold in Australia, Mr Kelly said.

Liverpool. Protest against $70m terminal

Liverpool City Council has set Sunday August 15 for its protest rally against the planned $70 million Moorebank container terminal. A council press release said the rally will “say NO'' to the intermodal freight terminal. Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese said that the terminal would inject hundreds of new jobs into the area. More than $35 million was allocated towards planning, surveys and community consultation in the last Federal Government budget. A further $35 million was set aside for relocating the School of Military Engineering, currently located at the site, to nearby Holsworthy Army Base. Developer Stockland and its partners also own a site across the road, known as the Defence National Distribution Centre and plan to develop it into a secondary container facility.
