Parramatta. Redevelopment of major site

Cumberland Courier Newspapers plans to redevelop the Parramatta Advertiser site, at 142-154 Macquarie Street, Parramatta. The EGO Group Architects, on the group’s behalf, has applied to the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water for approval, under Part 6 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974, to undertake archaeological test excavation and monitoring prior to the redevelopment.

Westmead. Professor Reddel honoured

Professor Roger Reddel, director, of the Westmead-based Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI), has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. Fellowship of the academy, one of the highest accolades bestowed on Australian scientists, is made up of more than 400 of Australia's top scientists. Professor Reddel is a world-leading authority on cell immortalisation.

Region. Projected population increases

Department of Planning figures show the greatest projected population in the Sydney metropolitan area is in the south-west, with an increase of 113 per cent. Sydney city, 60 per cent, and the north-west, 52 per cent The least projected growth in the metropolitan area is Sydney’s south region, 15 per cent, and the north east region, 18 per cent.

Smithfield. PBL cancels project

PBL Media has abandoned a plan to build a $150 million printing and distribution centres, at Smithfield, for its ACP Magazines, after spending more than 18 months looking for sites and talking to foreign printing-equipment suppliers. PBL lodged an environmental assessment document with the Department of Planning, which said the proposed facility would cost $15 million to alter the existing building, and plant and equipment would cost between $135 million and $200 million.
