Region. Award for cyberarts work

University of Western Sydney Senior Research Fellow, Stelarc, based at the Bankstown campus, has been recognised with a prestigious award at the 2010 Prix Arts Electronica, an international competition for Cyberarts in Austria. His current work involves the development of an interactive robot that draws on new technologies in robotics, sensors and artificial intelligence

Parramatta. Jobs Expo in July

The Centrelink Jobs Expo, part of the Australian Government’s Keep Australia Working strategy to support Australian industry and jobs, will be held at Rosehill Gardens Event Centre. on Friday, July 2, from 10.00am-3.00pm. The main aim is to provide real job opportunities for local people.

Warrick Farm. Approval for rail siding

The Department of Planning has approved the construction and operation of a rail siding to connect Independent Media Print Group’s printing facility, at Warrick Farm, to the Southern Sydney Freight Line.

Bankstown. Receiver appointed to BAC Devco

KordaMentha has been appointed as receiver and administrator to the Bankstown Airport Corporation development company, known as BAC Devco. A loan worth almost $60m is understood to be owed to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Mirvac, Leighton Holdings and superannuation fund, Westscheme, own equal shares in BAC Devco a company that initially owned up to 104 hectares surrounding the airport, with $300 million worth of development potential. The actual Bankstown Airport is not in receivership and is separately owned by another consortium that includes the Mirvac-controlled company, James Fielding, a fund managed by Colonial First State and Westscheme.

Eastern Creek. Proposal to increase waste tip

The Department of Planning has on public exhibition an application for the Eastern Creek Waste and Recycling Centre, operated by WSN at Eastern Creek, to increase the capacity of two existing cells, to create a new cell, to increase the approved waste disposal rate to a maximum of 600,000 tonnes per annum and to extend the cessation date for the acceptance of putrescible waste at the site to 30 June 2016.

Quakers Hill. Two projects worth $19 million

Two projects totalling $19 million – the upgrading of the Quakers Hill station and an adjacent 200-space commuter car park – are underway, as part of the NSW Government’s $230 million duplication of the Richmond Line between Quakers Hill and Schofields.

Region. New head for Aldi

In January 2011, Tom Daunt, Aldi Australia’s MD buying, will succeed Michael Kloeters, who has headed the German discount firm since it opened in Australia in 2001. Mr Kloeters has been appointed to the company’s international supervisory board. Aldi, which has distribution centres at Minchinbury and Prestons, has over 200 stores operating across New South Wales, ACT, Queensland and Victoria.

Parramatta. Jim Bosnjak sells $6.5m property

Jim Bosnjak, former chairman of bus company,Westbus, based in Parramatta, has sold an apartment in Macquarie Street, in the Sydney CBD, for $6.5 million. He sold an adjoining apartment for $6.96 million last year. Mr Bosnjak, who is the non-executive chairman, of UniLife Medical Solutions, retains links with Western Sydney and has interests in Croatia. ComfortDelGro Cabcharge Pty Ltd purchased the company, which traces it origins to 1955, in October 2005, from National Express and the Bosnjak family, for $106.7 million.
