Parramatta. Acquisition of properties

Parramatta City Council will discuss, in closed committee at a special council meeting tomorrow night, the acquisition of properties 20-22, 24 & 26 Darcy Street, as part of its $1.4 billion Civic Place redevelopment.

Parramatta. Proposed laws face opposition

Proposed laws allowing councils the right to purchase private land and transfer it to developers for a profitable resale goes to the NSW parliament this week, and neither the coalition nor the NSW Greens will be supporting it, according to The Australian Financial Review. The High Court of Australia had stopped the sale of properties in Darcy Street to the council to bulk up the proposed $1.4 billion Civic Place redevelopment.

Acquisition of properties for Civic Place project

Parramatta City Council has resolved to acquire a number of properties for its Civic Place masterplan. They include: 160 Church street, 12 Darcy Street, 14 Darcy Street, 20-22 Darcy Street, 24 Darcy Street, 26 Darcy Street and 28 Darcy Street. Council also resolved to compulsory acquire Darcy Street and Church, and close Darcy Street and Church Street.

Controversial planning proposal

A controversial proposal in new planning reform legislation appears to allow NSW councils to compulsorily acquire land for major development projects. The proposal was reportedly driven by Parramatta City Council, which has been unable to come to agreement with owners of holdings, in Darcy Street, that form part of the $1.4 billion Civic place project, a public-private partnership approved by council and the NSW government.
