Fast rail service may get priority

The trialling of marshals at Sydney CBD train stations to get people on and off trains faster, The Sydney Morning Herald notes: “There is speculation the government will switch priorities this term to a European subway-style metro fund largely by the private sector”. In 2004, the Dutch bank, ABN AMRO and Leighton Holdings in a joint venture, proposed a $2 billion Western FastRail project, which included an underground link between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. The service would reduce travelling time from Penrith to the Sydney CBD from 55 minutes to 28 minutes. The government is considering the proposal.
