Region. Need to reverse trend

The Urban Taskforce Australia has released a report, Jobs in Western Sydney, Redressing the Balance, which finds that the most important issue in improving Sydney’s transport and infrastructure problem is to reverse the 200,000 commuters heading daily from the region to work in other parts of the metropolitan area. “By 2031, there are likely to be over 300,000 commuters unless we take more actions to dramatically increase job opportunities in Western Sydney,” said taskforce CEO, Chris Johnson. The Urban Taskforce is a property development industry group.

Region. Jobs 'diamond'

The Urban Taskforce Australia has proposed the Western Sydney Jobs Diamond, an area connecting Parramatta. Sydney Olympic Park, Penrith, Liverpool, Rouse Hill and the Western Sydney Employment Lands within which higher order jobs related to health, research and the University of Western Sydney are located.

Region. Need to fight for local jobs

Western Sydney needs the business community to fight for local jobs, infrastructure and a local airport. Western Sydney is the solution to Sydney's growth problem but only if it is prepared to speak up, said Christopher Brown, chairman of Parramatta Economic Development Forum and member on the federal/state commission on Sydney's second airport

Region. Jobs to go

More than 100 jobs are to be shed at its Bonds and Berlei distribution centres in Sydney. Eighteen forklift drivers and packers from the Berlei distribution centre, at Wentworthville, and 88 at the Bonds distribution centre, at Minto, are to be shed. A new distribution centre will be in Melbourne. "It's close to rail, it's close to the air and it's close to the sea, It will allow us to operate a lot more efficiently," a Pacific Brands’ spokesperson said.

Region. 8000 jobs over five years

Carecareers, a NSW employment initiative, says more than 8300 jobs are anticipated to be up for grabs in Western Sydney between now and 2015. The jobs are part the 40,000 expected to be recruited across NSW in the next five years, in the disability and community care sector,, according to National Disability Services NSW. A forum will be held at Penrith RSL today

Bankstown. Jobs boost at airport

Currently it is estimated that Sydney Metro Airport Bankstown has created either directly or indirectly over 6000 jobs. “We further estimate that over the next 20 years an additional 10,500 jobs will be created. We strongly support providing employment opportunities for both employers and employees in the local area. Our Aviation Careers Expo is just one way supporting employment growth,” the Sydney Metro Flyer e-newsletter. Approval has been granted for the commencement of civil works by Western Earthmoving to provide a new vehicle storage area of approximately 5 hectares for Pickles Auctions expansion at the eastern end of the airport complex.

Parramatta. Aboriginal job opportunities

Aboriginal job seekers in Parramatta electorate area have received a boost from the State Government with a grant to fund vocational education training and employment opportunities, State MP for Parramatta, Tanya Gadiel, said. The Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth, said the grants have been made through the NSW Government’s innovative Elsa Dixon Aboriginal Employment Program.

Region. New employment area

The NSW Government expects to announce at the end of May a “major initiative”, which would cater for 50,000 workers, on a 10,500-hectare parcel of land stretching from the M4 and M7 junction to Kemps Creek and Badgerys Creek. The Minister for Planning, Kristina Keneally, said the Western Sydney Employment Lands would solidify the area’s economy for the next 30 years.
