Parramatta. Job generation

Parramatta City Council’s employment development strategy makes employment generation the overarching goal for Parramatta. It aims to meet or exceed the Metropolitan Plan targets of 27,500 extra jobs by 2036; increase the number of people living and working in Parramatta; shift the profile of the workforce towards the ‘knowledge’ end of the employment spectrum; and concentrate employment in four specialists precincts; CBD, Westmead, Camellia and Rydalmere.

Parramatta. Job figures in question

Figures produced by the government's Transport Data Centre, in December, contain jobs forecasts in 12 ''centres'' sharply below those in the government's main planning document that guides Sydney's growth, the Metropolitan Strategy, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.. While the Metropolitan Strategy, for example, forecast Parramatta would get more than 70,000 new jobs by 2036, the TDC predictions have slashed that number by about 20,000 to just over 50,000. A spokesman for the Department of Planning rejected the findings of the inquiry and said the Transport Data Centre figures should be ignored. ''The Transport Data Centre figures are a projection of raw data based on a 'business as usual' assumption, not taking into account the government's policy of creating new jobs within existing centres, close to transport and other infrastructure,'' he said.

Parramatta. Job figures 'factually wrong'

Parramatta City Council disputes the significant reduction in the CBD workforce contained in the Christie Report, an independent assessment of Sydney’s transport plans, partly sponsored by The Sydney Morning Herald. The report noted “the Government’s latest employment forecasts, quietly released in December 2009, now envisage only 11,000 additional jobs in the Parramatta centre in the 30 years between 2006 and 2036. Council’s comment is “the revised forecasts from the NSW Transport Data Centre about Parramatta, published in the Christie Report-Herald article, are factually wrong. Council’s own forecasts show that Parramatta could add between 30,000 and 40,000 new jobs by 2031. This is also supported by a study undertaken by WSROC and the UWS Urban Research Centre last year saying Parramatta will likely do better than the targets in the Metro Strategy”.

Parramatta Low job figures 'quietly' released

Parramatta’s CBD workforce growth has been dramatically reduced according to the Christie report into Sydney’s transport plans. The report states the government “quietly” released figures in December 2009, which now envisage only 11,000 additional jobs in the Parramatta CBD in the 30 years between 2006 and 2036. The government’s Local Environment Plan for Parramatta, in December 2007, forecast an additional 30,000 workers.

Parramatta. Employment growth

Employment in the Parramatta CBD has grown at least eightfold since 1971, from an estimated 5,000 jobs to an approximate 40,0002 today. Parramatta City Council said strong employment growth was evident across a number of industry sectors including health services, finance and insurance and professional services.
