Silverwater. $610m purchase completed

The Brisbane-based Super Retail Group has finalised its $610 million purchase of sports good retailer Rebel Group, at Silverwater, and appointed a former Rebel manager, Erica Berchtold, to drive growth in the business. Ms Berchtold, currently a manager at Specialty Fashion Group, and will join Super Retail on November 7, has over 15 years of experience in the retail industry, and was general manager of merchandise with Rebel between 2003 and 2007.

Silverwater. Rebel Group sold for $610 million

Queensland-based Super Retail Group has agreed to buy sports and leisure specialist, Rebel Group, based in Silverwater, for $610 million from Archer Capital. Rebel is Australia’s largest sports retailer, with 11 outlets in Western Sydney. Super Rebel plans to grow the Rebel chain to 185 stores, from 128, over the medium term.

Sportsgoods retailer Rebel Group, headquarted at Silverwater and with outlets across Western Sydney, is unlikely to relist on the stock exchange in the next 12 months after reporting flat 2009-10 sales. The dire state of the retail market and its own performance is expected to lead to plans of an imminent return to the stockmarket to be shelved.
