Parramatta. Key challenges facing the city

Population and knowledge-based employment growth, targeting younger workers, marketing the city brand and the Civic Place redevelopment are among the key economic development challenges facing the city, according to Parramatta City Council. Some $1.5 million will be allocated for project management of the $1.6 billion Civic Place project, which is scheduled to commence in the 2011/12 financial year. Stage one should be completed in 2013/14.

Liverpool. Economic manager sought

Liverpool City Council has advertised for an economic development manager to develop and implement an economic strategy for the growth of the local government area. Liverpool is the regional city for South West Sydney. The salary range is $116,950 to $136,130.

Parramatta. Key challenges facing the city

Parramatta City Council has nominated 16 key economic development challenges facing the city over the next five years. These include: employment growth; human capital/knowledge based employment, a key predictor and driver of population growth; industry/employer targeting; target younger workers; amenity/culture/buzz; and marketing the city brand.

Parramatta. Economic strategy in 2001

Parramatta City Council’s economic development strategy is expected to be an item on the business paper for council’s first meeting in 2011, on February 1. A tourism strategy is expected to be tabled early in 2011.

Fairfield. Economic development strategy

An integrated economic development strategy and to guide decision-making for the area's economic development into the future will be prepared, according to Fairfield City Council's draft management plan for the next four years. An Inward Investment and Industry Development Program will provide opportunities for local business operators to expand operations to address supply and/or industry gaps, or attract businesses to establish or relocate to the area.

Parramatta. 'Healthy return on investment'

Parramatta City Council's economic development team delivered around 30 projects in 2007-08 and leveraged or supported projects which had an overall total value of approximately $2 million, “giving a healthy return on our investment,” a report to council said. Council raises approximately $650,000 annually from a special levy on commercial properties. The team assisted in the relocation of approximately 2500 new employees, 10 additional new businesses for long-term unemployed. A survey of Western Sydney Business Connection businesses indicated that over 47 per cent intended to increase employment over the next year.

Parramatta. Stronger partnerships with business

Parramatta City Council has called for expressions of interest in the position of convenor of business partnerships, which has a key responsibility to assist council in developing stronger partnerships with businesses and business-support organisations, under the umbrella of Parramatta Economic Development Partnerships. Other responsibilities include chairing four roundtables annually with the business community, developing other effective ways to consult with business and co-ordinate an independent annual audit of economic development expenditure. The position is for 1-2 days a month and attracts an honorarium to a maximum of $10,000 annually.
