Region. UWS professor wins a major award

Associate Professor Caroline Smith, from the UWS Centre for Complementary Medicine (CompleMed), has won a major award for her pioneering clinical research into acupuncture techniques for women, the inaugural award for Translational Research The prize was awarded at the National Institute of Complementary Medicine's symposium in Brisbane. It is designed to recognise complementary medical techniques that improve health outcomes and further the national research and innovation agenda. She has attracted international acclaim for her clinical research and summaries of evidence regarding complementary therapies to treat morning sickness and labour pain.

Region. Top award for woman lawyer

The Women Lawyers Association of NSW has named UWS graduate, Anny Slater, the state’s top Woman Lawyer of the Year in Private Practice. She established Slaters Intellectual Property Lawyers, in 2001. In 2008 the practice was named Best Enterprise at the Australian Business Awards. She is also the MD of the entertainment company, Moondance Pictures, which has a production deal with Sony Pictures International. A 2002 graduate of the Master of Arts (Screenwriting), Ms Slater has recently been asked by Oscar winner, Michael Moore, to teach at his new school, a role she also filled at Yale University in 2005. Ms Slater is also an active member in the Law Society's "shadowing program" for Indigenous students, and was last year placed on the NSW Government's honour roll for her outstanding achievements in law, arts and community service.

Region. UWS wins employer award

The University of Western Sydney has received the prestigious Employer of Choice for Women title for the sixth consecutive year from the Federal Government's Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA. The award is given to organisations that are recognising and advancing women in the workplace. Vice-chancellor, Professor Janice Reid, said she was delighted that the university had been awarded this important honour. "On behalf of the UWS community, I am very proud that the university's achievements towards creating a fair workplace have been acknowledged in this way," she said.
